Technology

I'm generally enthusiastic about technology. I have two computers, phoenix (a desktop) and sharp (a laptop), both of which run Gentoo GNU/Linux, and which I use for email, reading slashdot, writing HTML, listening to music etc.

Currently phoenix is an Athlon XP-2400+ with 1024MB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It is connected to my scanner, printer, camera dock, pen drive, iPod and a TV card; its web connection is via an 802.11b wifi connection to the house's modified ADSL router. It has a spanky new LG Flatron 17" TFT as I finally got fed up with the desk space my old monitor took up.

Sharp is an Athlon XP-1600+ with 512MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. It has a PCMCIA wifi card for networking, and I'll probably use it more when I move away from Shrewsbury in February. At the moment it doesn't see much use because the display only does 1024x768 and has no useful 3D acceleration. Also the batteries are NiMH and are pretty much dead. Thanks to all those people who suggested sources of replacements or enquired to see if I'd had any success. I did find someone who could sell me a few spares he'd acquired but never summoned up the bearsedness to do anything about it. It won't matter for long, anyway, as I intend to replace sharp with something more modern eventually.
